Popped collars, bell bottoms and padded shoulder pads are just some of many trends that have gone in and out of style over the years. However, when it comes to fashion, many pieces seem to have a timeless charm. And no, I am not just talking about grandma’s statement brooch, but the glamorous fur coats and limited edition brand name items that each have a story of their own.
Dating vintage clothing can be a puzzle, but it is always noteworthy to look for the minor details that can make a big difference in determining authenticity and value. For example, the types of linings sleeves and zippers used can be a tell tale sign of the age and originality of garments.
Although zippers were invented in the 1800s, they surprisingly were not used in clothing until the 1920s. Zippers were then not added to womens closing for years because they were considered vulgar. Women who wore zippers in their clothing were seen as “easy” because their garments were seen as too simple to take off. Eventually, when zippers were added they were always concealed with fabric to hide them. It was not until the 1950s that they were universally accepted on the side and then later in the center of the back.
Puff sleeves originally rose to fame during the Renaissance on evening gowns. The style resurfaced in the 1930s, 1970s and most recently today. While there have been numerous adaptations of this trend, the hyper feminine look continues to play a crucial role in the evolution of fashion.
Another trend that has come and gone throughout the years is tie dye. The practice of tie dye originates in ancient China and Japan. The height of the trend can be attributed to the Hippie Era during the 1970s where people sported oversized t-shirts with colorful tie dye designs. Most recently, in 2020, “how to videos” on lounge wear tie dyeing have taken over social media.
Silk Scarves are a hot trend for Summer, they can be used as belts, hair sashes and bows. These colorful statement pieces can bring a pop of color to otherwize neutral looks.
Antique jewelry can be easily transformed into functional elegant pieces. Jems and stones on rings can be converted into necklaces and brooches can be used as household decorative pieces, such as knobs for drawers. Jewelry trends that are popular right now include chain links, heirloom jewelry, oversized hoops and colorful statement pieces.
Vintage fashion has become a very attractive option for shoppers. Consignment stores, thrift shops and flea markets are very popular right now due to their global environmental benefits.
